The road-team is temporarily stranded at a farm expertly depicted in the set designed by Director David Clevinger. The red farmhouse is complete with four shuttered windows that open and shut on cue. A traditional windmill graces stage left. What happens next is a cross between “Hee Haw” and “Laugh-In.”
Don’t look for a plot. There is none. But that doesn’t stop this very talented cast of delivering 90 minutes of non-stop laughs and songs. Hang onto your seats as for good measure as they bring in audience participation with interviews, an auction, a Patsy Cline sing-along, and miscellaneous repartee.
Stephanie Adams is Sr. Mary Paul-Amnesia, Debbie Sussman is Sr. Mary Wilhelm, Kelly Coy is Sr. Robert Anne (transportation), Heather Good is Sr. Mary Leo, Spencer Folmar is Fr. Virgil Manly Trott, and Deborah J. Carpenter along with Nina Vatter cameo as Sr. Mary Regina and Sr Mary Nina.
Compliments to the cast for mastering the 28 scenes and numbers, many of which are absolutely
nun-sensible.
Music is nicely provided by a three piece band placed upstage center. It never overpowers the singing. Sound is not a problem.
The “Nunsense” series has made playwright Dan Goggin a fortune. The original version has the record for second longest running Off Broadway musical. The series includes “Nunsense 2,” “Nunsense Jamboree,” Meshuggah Nuns,” “Nunsations,” and “Nunset Boulevard.” Spinoffs include “Nunsense A-Men” among others.
This version by the Bay Street Players has a Christmas theme as well as an unforgettable soap-suds finale that makes it a great choice for the Holiday Season.
“Nunsense Jamboree” runs Wednesdays-Sundays through December 11 at the State Theatre in downtown Eustis. Evening performances start at 8 pm, Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $20, except on Wednesdays-Thursdays when they are $17. Other packages are available. For reservations and other information call 357-7777 or visit their Web Site at www.baystreetplayers.org.
